Downtown Jersey City’s biggest holiday night is officially on the calendar. The Historic Downtown Special Improvement District (HDSID) will host its annual Christmas Tree and Menorah Lighting Ceremony on Tuesday, December 1, 2026, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Newark Avenue Pedestrian Mall stage area in Jersey City, Hudson County, NJ, according to the HDSID event page.
The free community celebration brings gifts from Santa, cookies and hot chocolate to the heart of Downtown. Here is what our team confirmed about the night, plus how to make sure your kids are on the gift list.

What to Expect
HDSID describes the evening as its annual Christmas Tree and Menorah Lighting Ceremony, “including Gifts from Santa + Cookies + Hot Chocolate.” The tree and menorah are lit together at 5:30 p.m. on the pedestrian mall stage, and Santa hands out gifts to children after the ceremony.
Last year’s celebration on the same block drew a big Downtown crowd, with caroling, holiday treats and families lined up for Santa. The 2026 program lists the same core lineup of the lighting, gifts, cookies and hot chocolate, so it is an easy, low key way to kick off the season with the kids.
How to Get a Gift From Santa
Gifts are part of a holiday toy giveaway run with Whole Spectrum Autism. According to the Whole Spectrum Autism toy giveaway page, families should fill out one registration form per child by November 27, 2026, and pick up gifts on December 1 during the tree lighting at the stage by Morlees. Whole Spectrum lists the pick up at 6:30 p.m., while HDSID lists gift distribution from 6 to 7 p.m., so we suggest arriving before the 5:30 p.m. lighting and staying near the stage.
Plan Your Night
- Take the PATH to Grove Street: the Newark Avenue Pedestrian Mall is steps from the station
- Bundle up, since the whole event is outdoors
- Register each child for a gift before the November 27 deadline
- Stay for dinner on Newark Avenue, which is lined with restaurants and bars
- Make it a double header: the Newport Tree Lighting runs the same night from 6 to 8 p.m.
