Kearny is the kind of town you discover and then keep coming back to. This West Hudson community in Hudson County, NJ has a spring fed lake in a park that dates to 1888, a long riverfront park on the Passaic, deep soccer roots and even helicopter flights over Manhattan. Our team pulled every detail below from the Town of Kearny, Hudson County Parks or the business itself.

Here are the best things to do in Kearny, NJ this fall and winter.

Walk Around Fairy Lake in West Hudson Park

West Hudson Park spans 46 acres across Kearny and Harrison, and the land has served as a park since 1888. The highlight is the 2 acre Fairy Lake, fed by fresh springs and rain runoff, ringed by about 4 miles of walkways, a Chinese gazebo, an ornamental trellis and scenic bridges. There are also two playgrounds, picnic areas, ball fields, a soccer field and four lighted tennis courts.

Spend an Afternoon at Kearny Riverbank Park

Kearny Riverbank Park runs along the west side of town on Passaic Avenue between Bergen Avenue and the Belleville Turnpike, overlooking the Passaic River. It packs in more than most people realize:

  • A public archery range near Bergen Avenue, with no permit required
  • The Frank A. Vincent Marina, where boats up to 22 feet can launch
  • The Kearny Dog Park between Park Avenue and South Midland Avenue, open 9 a.m. to sunset
  • The Corbett Street roller hockey rink and the Michael Branin Memorial Soccer Facility
  • Memorial sections such as Irish Heritage Park, Wallace Glen and Veteran’s Memorial Park

Nearby on the east side of Passaic Avenue, Al Stewart Ecology Park adds another patch of green. More info: Kearny Parks and Recreation.

Skate, Shoot Hoops or Play at Gunnell Oval

The renovated Gunnell Oval complex has walkways, a playground, a skate park, basketball, tennis and volleyball courts and outdoor exercise equipment, plus baseball, softball and soccer fields. The town lists it as open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to dusk, and field play requires a permit.

Celebrate Soccer Town USA

Kearny’s soccer roots run so deep that some call it Soccer Town USA, and the town has produced numerous World Cup players. Catch a youth game at Gunnell Oval or Veteran’s Field on Belgrove Drive, or head to the neighboring pro stadium in Harrison for a match.

See Manhattan From a Helicopter

FlyNYON runs doors off helicopter flights over New York City from its terminal in Kearny, with plenty of parking on site. Flights pass landmarks like the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, the Brooklyn Bridge and the World Trade Center. It is a bucket list gift idea for the holidays.

Shop Kearny Avenue

Kearny Avenue is the heart of the town’s Urban Enterprise Zone, one of 37 in New Jersey. Since 1985 the zone has reinvested more than 30 million dollars of sales tax into the local business district, and it is a good place to browse independent shops and grab a bite in a diverse dining scene that includes Peruvian and Latin American kitchens. The UEZ also produces town favorites like the annual Tree Lighting Festival, the Kearny Town Wide Yard Sale and Kearny Eats.

Dig Into Local History and Free Library Programs

The Kearny Public Library at 318 Kearny Avenue hosts free workshops and kids’ events all year, and the Kearny Museum at the same address opens Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings.

Mark Your Calendar for December

The Kearny Recreation Department’s Holiday Celebration is held on the first Saturday in December starting at noon at Town Hall, 402 Kearny Avenue, with music and activities before Santa arrives. It is open to Kearny children in pre K through 5th grade.

The KUEZ’s annual Tree Lighting Festival is set for Thursday, December 3, 2026 at Town Hall. Read our Kearny Tree Lighting Festival guide.
