Jersey City is the biggest dining town in Hudson County, NJ, and the best meals are spread far beyond Newark Avenue. Our team picked 12 restaurants across Downtown, Paulus Hook, the Heights, Journal Square, the West Side and Bergen-Lafayette, and checked each one on its own website. We skipped spots from our recent pizza, brunch and skyline-view guides so you get a fresh list.

Downtown and Paulus Hook

1. Ela Greek Kitchen

Ela Greek Kitchen at 179 Newark Avenue is a cozy, welcoming Greek spot that works for a leisurely dinner, a quick lunch or a solo meal at the bar. It also caters if you want to bring Greek food to your next party.

2. Cellar 335

Chef Jamie Knott’s Cellar 335 at 335 Newark Avenue is a tropical-themed room for handcrafted cocktails and globally inspired shared plates, like sticky spare ribs, Korean-style wings and salmon tartare on crispy rice. The kitchen is open Tuesday through Saturday from 5 p.m., and happy hour runs Tuesday through Friday from 5 to 6 p.m.

3. The Archer

The Archer at 176 Newark Avenue is a craft cocktail bar with a serious kitchen: small plates featuring wild game, foraged mushrooms and fresh vegetables. It is 21 and over, takes no reservations and serves food until 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and midnight on weekends.

4. Satis Bistro

In Paulus Hook, Satis Bistro at 212 Washington Street is a charming European-style cafe. Dinner is served nightly from 5 p.m., lunch on Fridays, and weekend brunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. brings eggs Benedict and pastries.

5. DomoDomo

DomoDomo has brought its Japanese cuisine and hand-roll dining to 200 Greene Street since 2019. Lunch runs daily from noon to 3:30 p.m., and dinner goes until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

6. Zeppelin Hall

For a big, fun night out, Zeppelin Hall at 88 Liberty View Drive bills itself as Jersey City’s ultimate biergarten. It opens at 4 p.m. on weekdays and noon on weekends, and its private room can hold groups of up to 125.

The Heights

7. Island Central

Island Central at 329 Central Avenue serves Filipino cuisine in the Heights and is known for its Kamayan events. It is closed Wednesdays and opens as early as 9 a.m. on weekends. The restaurant notes that dine-in hours can change for private reservations, so check its page or Instagram before you go.

8. Nanduji

Nanduji brings Indian street food to 3501 John F. Kennedy Boulevard. It is open from 4 p.m. on weekdays and noon on weekends, closed Wednesdays, with pickup and delivery available. Its sister kitchen, Nandoo’s, is at 16 Liberty Avenue near Journal Square.

Journal Square

9. Sri Ganesh Dosa House

In the India Square stretch of Newark Avenue, Sri Ganesh Dosa House at 809 Newark Avenue has served South Indian food for more than 25 years: crispy dosas, soft idly, chutneys and fresh filter coffee. It is open seven days a week.

10. The Kati Roll Company

The Kati Roll Company at 924 Bergen Avenue is a quick, satisfying stop for Indian street-style rolls, open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. It is a smart pick before a show once Loew’s Jersey Theatre reopens in Journal Square on November 13.

West Side and Bergen-Lafayette

11. Laico’s

Laico’s opened in the 1970s as a family bar and pizza-and-pasta spot on a residential street on the West Side, and it is still on that same street at 67 Terhune Avenue. Today the Italian menu has been updated and modernized, and the dining rooms keep their warm, neighborly feel.

12. Harry’s Daughter

Harry’s Daughter at 339 Communipaw Avenue has brought Caribbean culture to Bergen-Lafayette since 2017. The gastropub mixes traditional and contemporary Caribbean flavors with craft cocktails made with house-made juices and syrups. It is open seven days a week from 3 p.m., and it is currently walk-ins only.

Tips for Eating Around Jersey City

  • Use the PATH and light rail. Downtown, Journal Square and Exchange Place spots are near PATH stations.
  • Check walk-in policies. The Archer and Harry’s Daughter are walk-in only.
  • Watch midweek closures. Island Central and Nanduji close on Wednesdays, and Cellar 335 closes Sundays and Mondays.
