The Weehawken Waterfront Park and Recreation Center is the township’s largest open space, a riverfront sports park at 1 Port Imperial Boulevard at the foot of the Palisades. It is open every day from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., with turf fields, a track, tennis courts, playgrounds and the Hudson River Walk running right along its edge, all facing the Manhattan skyline.
Our team pulled together what you need to know before you go, from what is on site and who can use it to the township’s 9/11 memorial a short walk away on the riverfront.
Where It Is
The park sits on the Hudson River in Weehawken, just north of Lincoln Harbor, with the Palisades cliffs rising behind it. It is run by the Township of Weehawken’s Recreation Department.
- Address: 1 Port Imperial Blvd., Weehawken, NJ 07086
- Hours: daily, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Cost: free to visit; organized play requires a township permit
- Recreation Department: 201-319-6061
- Website: Township of Weehawken Recreation
Size and Layout
The park was designed by Mathews Nielsen Landscape Architects for the township and completed in 2009 on a former brownfield site that was fully capped before construction. The design packs active recreation into the middle of the site and saves the edges for open lawns, seating and native plantings along the water. Because nearly the whole site sits in the 100-year floodplain, the designers chose native plants that can handle brackish river floodwater, recreating a natural riverbank along the water’s edge. The project won honor awards from both the New York and New Jersey chapters of the American Society of Landscape Architects.
What Is There
Fields and Track
According to the township, the park has a multi-purpose turf soccer field and two softball fields, one of them turf, plus a track that is popular with local runners. The designers describe it as a six-lane, 400-meter cushioned running track. Any organized activity or group play on the fields requires a township permit, so call the Recreation Department before booking a team practice.
Tennis Courts
There are three tennis courts. Note that the township reserves them for Weehawken residents by permit.
Playgrounds and Workout Area
Families get two small playgrounds. One is the Linear Park play area along the river, which is for toddlers only. Adults can use the outdoor workout area with exercise equipment.
The Hudson River Walk
The Hudson River Walk runs along the park’s edge, so you can extend a visit into a long waterfront walk north toward Port Imperial or south toward Lincoln Harbor and Hoboken. The lawns and seating areas face straight across the river to Midtown.
The Weehawken 9/11 Memorial
Weehawken’s 9/11 Memorial sits right along the Hudson River Walk in the Port Imperial section of the riverfront, a short stroll from the park. The township describes it as two trident-shaped steel beams that once supported the Twin Towers, set with an infinity pool and fountain, surrounded by benches. It was dedicated in September 2011 near the spot where triage was set up after the attacks, and the arch of beams directs your eye toward the World Trade Center site. The township holds its annual September 11 remembrance ceremony there.
Seasonal Events
The park’s track and waterfront path host the Weehawken 5K for Food Justice on Saturday, November 14, 2026, with check-in at 1 Port Imperial Boulevard and staging at the Weehawken track (rain date Sunday, November 15). In warmer months, the fields are busy with township youth leagues.

Getting There Tip
The Lincoln Harbor stop on the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail is the closest rail station, with the township’s waterfront athletic fields just to its northeast. If you drive, street parking near the waterfront can be tight on game days, so arrive early.
