One of the great old theaters of Hudson County, NJ is about to come back to life. Loew’s Jersey Theatre, the 1929 movie palace across from the Journal Square Transportation Center in Jersey City, reopens this fall after a historic restoration, and our team has the details on Grand Opening Weekend on Friday, November 13 and Saturday, November 14, 2026.
A Jersey City Landmark, Restored
According to the theatre’s own history page, Loew’s Jersey opened on September 28, 1929 as one of five famed “Wonder Theatres.” In the 1930s it drew more than one million patrons a year, and stars like Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Bing Crosby and Bob Hope played its stage.
The story could have ended in 1986, when the theatre closed and was slated for demolition. Residents rallied, the Friends of the Loew’s led a long preservation effort, and Jersey City bought the building in 1993. It partially reopened in 2001, and in 2022 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The restoration is a collaboration between the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency, the State of New Jersey and NJEDA, and Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment. The theatre says its standing-room floor and flexible seating can hold 2,600 to 4,000 guests, which makes it one of the biggest live venues in the county.

The War On Drugs close out the opening weekend with special guest Nation of Language. If you like big, layered rock in a room built for sound, this is the night to circle.
Next Up: Jodeci on November 18
Wednesday, November 18, 2026. Doors at 7 p.m., show at 8 p.m.
The first week ends with R&B. Jodeci brings the 35th Anniversary Tour of Forever My Lady, celebrating the 1991 debut album that hit No. 1 on the Billboard Top R&B Albums chart.
The Loew’s events calendar already runs into December and beyond, with comedy, holiday shows and a hometown Nutcracker. We will cover the holiday lineup closer to the season.
Getting to Loew’s Jersey Theatre
The theatre sits at 54 Journal Square Plaza, Jersey City, NJ 07306, directly across from the Journal Square Transportation Center. The venue points out that PATH trains from Hoboken, Manhattan and Newark stop right there, along with regional buses, and that I-95, I-78 and Routes 1 and 9 are nearby for drivers.
