Stephen R. Gregg Park is Bayonne’s big Hudson County park: nearly 100 acres on the east bank of Newark Bay, entered from Kennedy Boulevard between West 37th and West 48th Streets. It is open seven days a week and mixes ball fields, courts and a running track with quiet gardens, a pond and a half-mile waterfront promenade.
Many longtime locals still call it Bayonne Park, its original name. Our team put together this guide to what is there, how to get in, and the history behind the name, so you can plan a walk, a game or a sunset stroll by the bay.
Where It Is and How to Get In
The park sits on the west side of Bayonne along Newark Bay, with Kennedy Boulevard running along its eastern edge. Hudson County lists the park at 43rd Street and Kennedy Boulevard. According to the county’s park brochure, drivers can enter from Kennedy Boulevard at West 37th Street, at West 48th Street, and on Devlin Drive between West 40th and West 41st Streets, and the park map marks dedicated parking areas inside the park.

Size and Layout
At close to 100 acres, Gregg Park is one of the largest open spaces in the county park system. The active side is packed with fields and courts, while the passive side leans into the scenery: a network of walkways and small bridges around the pond, cherry blossom trees, an ornamental garden, stone structures and a gazebo that make it a favorite backdrop for photos. Along the water, the half-mile promenade gives you wide views across Newark Bay.
What Is There
Sports Fields and Courts
Hudson County lists an impressive lineup here: seven baseball and softball fields, eight soccer fields, ten tennis courts, two lighted basketball courts, a football field, a running track and field, an exercise and cross-country course, a bocce court and a horseshoe pit. If you are a runner, the track and the waterfront promenade make an easy loop for a morning workout.
Playground and Spray Pool
Kids have a playground year round, and the park’s spray pool runs in the summer months, which makes Gregg Park a go-to for Bayonne families when the weather heats up.
Waterfront and Fishing
The bay side is the star. Walk or jog the promenade, or bring a rod: the county notes that anglers can cast from the 48th Street bay front at the gazebo fishing pier. A section of the Hackensack River Greenway also runs along the park’s waterfront walkway, and in 2025 Hudson County added greenway signage at the pavilion on the park’s northwest corner.
The Stephen R. Gregg Statue
Near the 43rd Street side, look for the bronze statue of Stephen R. Gregg, unveiled by Hudson County on July 15, 2021. Sculpted by J. Brett Grill, it shows Gregg holding the machine gun he used to protect wounded comrades in 1944.
A Little History
The park was established in 1916 as Bayonne Park and designed by Charles N. Lowrie, the landscape architect behind several early Hudson County parks. In its early years, visitors were greeted by a line of fountains at the West 40th Street entrance, and locals lowered crab traps off the shoreline into Newark Bay. The park was later renamed for Stephen R. Gregg, a lifelong Bayonne resident who received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his charge on a German outpost in southern France in August 1944, an action that allowed the rescue of seven severely wounded American soldiers. Gregg went on to serve 51 years with the Hudson County Sheriff’s Department, retiring as chief of court officers.
Seasonal Tips
Fall and early winter are a quiet, beautiful time for the promenade, with low sun over the bay in the late afternoon. Spring brings the cherry blossoms around the pond, and summer is spray pool and ball field season. Getting There Tip
Driving is the easiest way in, using the Kennedy Boulevard entrances at West 37th or West 48th Street, or Devlin Drive. Without a car, NJ Transit buses run along Kennedy Boulevard, which borders the park on the east.
