West New York sits high on the Palisades with Manhattan views, and its neighbors take care of each other. Our team rounded up four West New York nonprofits and community groups that rescue community cats, feed local families and help students from low income communities get into college. Each one welcomes volunteers, donations or a friendly hello.
1. Evie’s Cat Rescue
Evie’s Cat Rescue is a West New York 501(c)(3) that offers low cost trap, neuter and return (TNR), shelters and rehomes friendly community cats, and gets medical care for sick strays. It also keeps a database of cat colonies and their local feeders and runs education programs. The rescue is named for Evie Hope, the only survivor of her litter, who was bottle fed from four days old. Adopt, foster or donate food and supplies through the Evie’s Cat Rescue website.
2. Love of Jesus Family Church
Love of Jesus Family Church at 5520 Jefferson Street holds Sunday services in Spanish and English plus a bilingual Tuesday night service. Beyond worship, the church hosts Community Health and Wellness Fairs, and in September it served hundreds of men, women and children with groceries, a baby pantry and free medical screenings. Volunteers help with Thursday distributions and the Saturday fairs. Learn more on the Love of Jesus Family Church website.
3. St. Joseph of the Palisades Parish
St. Joseph of the Palisades Parish at 6401 Palisade Avenue serves the people of West New York, Guttenberg and North Bergen. Its food pantry provides food for about 200 families in need every third Saturday of the month, and the Parish Office accepts non perishable donations like canned vegetables, soups, pasta, rice, tuna, cereal and baby food. Find details on the St. Joseph of the Palisades website.
4. Circle Match
Circle Match started in 2019 when Michael Sanchez, a graduate of Memorial High School in West New York, set up an informal peer support network for college applications. Two of his first mentees were admitted to Yale. Today the nonprofit helps driven students from low income communities through advisor led cohorts and interview prep, and it partners with 11 high schools. Apply, mentor or donate on the Circle Match website.
